The Story Of My Dollhouse
I'll never forget the day I went to a huge indoor flea market to see if I could find some dolls I was collecting at the time. I was wandering around and came upon a dollhouse that just captured me completely. It looked like an old farmhouse. The thing that fascinated me most were the little electric lights in all the different rooms. I have always loved dolls and had a dollhouse when I was a child, but nothing like that. Of course, that house was more for an adult than for a child. It was very delicate as far as the furniture and trimming were concerned, although, the house itself was quite sturdy.

I began checking the stores for dollhouses. The heavy wooden ones were quite expensive and, at that time, hard to put together. In my search I ran across the Greenleaf die-cut dollhouses in a store that had several of them assembled for display. I fell in love with the one above. It is "The Harrison." It was the large rooms and beautiful windows with window seats inside and window boxes outside that sold me on this particular house. The house is a good sized house, and it was also very affordable. I believe since then the company has changed hands, and I don't think they make "The Harrison" anymore. It would more likely have to be acquired on the secondary market.

I did a little rearranging of the interior walls. It comes with extra partitions so you can make changes if you would like. With a die-cut dollhouse it is very easy to make alterations without having power tools. I also built my own stair railings to add dimension.

Next I had to electrify it. I chose an electrical kit that had the capacity of a lot of lights. Those cute little lights had to be in abundance in my dollhouse.

I have always loved English Tudor style houses so this house filled the bill there also. I used stucco and stain. I stained the roof until someday when I decide to shingle it. Now I was ready to wallpaper and carpet. I wish that my real house was as easy to wallpaper. It was fun picking out wallpapers and carpeting. Picking out wallpaper was almost as confusing as doing it for a real house. I already changed the wallpaper in a couple of the rooms.

Most of the furniture in the dollhouse has been bought locally, but when my husband and I travel, I always look for miniatures as souveniers. I have also made several items in the dollhouse. I made all of the curtains, I crocheted some rugs and a bedspread and made some of the pots of flowers and plants. That is what really personalizes your dollhouse. It has miniature teddy bears, mice, birds, cats and dogs. I didn't care for the people so I had decided they were out visiting. I went to a dollhouse show a short time ago, and I ran across three cute little girls and some figures made of resin, so I now have a few people in my house.

Of course, you have to landscape the yard. The trees that are for electric train landscapes are perfect. It is fun to make mini flower arrangements with tiny dry flowers. The dollhouse has it's own squirrel, and there are two birdhouses as well as a bird feeder and bird bath.

I hope that you will enjoy taking a tour of the dollhouse. On all of the windows I put curtains that have kept the windows clear. One of my favorite things to do is to turn on the lights at night when the room is dark and peek into the windows. It looks so warm and cozy in there. Just like a real house. Please enjoy.
In addition to the links to the different rooms, I have just added a couple new pages.
